Located in Bocas del Toro, Panama, the Nayara five-star island resort has long been disconnected from the national grid and relied entirely on diesel generators for power. With plans to expand guest rooms, the existing power system would not only struggle to meet growing demand but also drive up already high fuel costs—monthly diesel expenses had reached as much as $12,000. To address this challenge, a 250kW hybrid solar system was designed and deployed for the resort.
The system consists of 504 solar panels (600W each), a 724kWh battery storage capacity, and an MPS 250kW / 208V inverter. Given the harsh, high-humidity, salt-laden environment of the island, all components are built with corrosion-proof and salt-mist-resistant designs to ensure long-term reliability. Once operational, solar power takes priority in meeting the resort’s 24/7 base load, while the original diesel generator is retained solely as backup power.
The results have been significant. Monthly diesel costs have been reduced by 70%, saving the resort approximately $8,000 per month. At this rate, the entire investment can be recovered within just two years. In addition, with no need to run diesel generators continuously at night, guests now enjoy a quieter and more comfortable stay. This island resort now has cleaner, quieter, and more cost-effective power.
